Game Day #9 – South Philadelphia – July 20, 2014 [Event #24]
Time: 10:30am – 7:30pm [Length –9 hours] [Overall – 202.5 hours]
Game #9 was special for several different reasons, little having to do with the game itself. With playoffs on the line, the Philadelphia Soul showed up and defeated a difficult San Jose squad that defeated us earlier in the season. To be honest, I don’t even recall what the final score was as the typical craziness of the game day experience limited how much of the games I was able to see.
I was asked to give another tour (the second in two weeks) to a season ticket holder that had been around since the team started in 2004. This was an awesome experience since that family had never really experienced the arena in that way – a behind the scenes look at their local sports venue with the chance to see exclusive spots like the Hall of Fame room and the balcony level (typically reserved solely for media members). I got a good sense that these people truly appreciated the tour, and the time I spent with them pre-game.
The birthday parties were once again completed without much issue. There really was not much special to note about the situation, except perhaps the meet-and-greet session was nowhere nearly as busy as I expected to be. We had about 10 parties signed up for the event tightly regulated, time sensitive event (exactly 40 minutes before the game due to SoulMate pre-game obligations require them to be in another area for their pre-game dance routine).
By the end of the night, I was relieved that the experience was over, however, I could also sense the finality of it all! There is nothing saying that I will never interact with these people again, however, I am also a realist and it can be really difficult to stay in contact with people when life is pulling you in vastly different directions. The entire mentorship was incredible, and I once again got a front-row view into what it takes to successfully run a sports operation / event.
I am not exactly sure what life has in store for me over the next few months or years, however, I feel this experience has been a beneficial one moving forward. To know that I was such a valuable piece of the organization, even working on a minimal part-time basis (Fridays & Game Days), leaves me with a ton of pride in the job I was able to do!
Now, let’s hope the Soul can find their way into the Playoffs, so I have one more reason to party with the people I’ve gotten to know fairly well over the last few months. Bigger things are on the horizon for some of those people, perhaps even myself, so I’d certainly like one last party. Besides, it’d also be nice to actually be able to watch a game this season….. well, one that doesn’t result in a soul-crushing last second loss [horrible pun absolutely intended!]
